CELPIP Writing Task 2 (Responding to Survey Questions) - Useful expressions

CELPIP Writing Task 1 - Complaint tips

(1) Giving an opinion

It is a must to write or speak. It is better to use various expressions rather than one or two fixed expressions.

- Personally, I think ...
- What I understand is ...
- The way I see it is...
- As far as I'm concerned, ...
- I'm convinced that ...
- In my opinion, ...
- In my view, ...
- From my point of view, ...
- I suppose ...
- It seems to me that ...

(2) Expressing Condition

Using conditional clauses does not simplify writing.

- If

I'll bring some wine if you want <-> If you want, I'll bring some wine.

- Whether

Mike didn't know whether Mary would arrive on Saturday or Sunday.

- Unless (=If ~ not)

We'll arrive at 5:00pm. unless our flight is late

- Provided that/Given that

I will come, provided that I am invited.

- In the case of

In case of delay, all information needs to be adapted

(3) Summarizing an opinion

Adding a summary at the end of the article is easy to understand.

- After all,
- All in all,
- All things considered,
- Briefly/In brief,
- In conclusion,
- On the whole,
- In short,
- In summary,
- To sum up,
- To summarize,
- Finally,
- I'd like to wind up/finish/ by saying that...
- Before I finish I'd finally like to say that...
- To summarize my (rather complex) views on the matter,
